CommVault Releases Results of Annual End-User Virtualization Survey

The adoption of server virtualization continues to accelerate as organizations of all sizes consolidate physical servers in an effort to rein in costs, improve application management and streamline IT operations. With those benefits comes a myriad of data protection challenges as users discover that legacy platforms are incapable of keeping up with the scale, scope and performance requirements of the virtual world. In order to keep pace with the data management needs of the virtualized data center, organizations are re-evaluating protection strategies in search of a better way to protect, manage and recover their environments.

News FactsServer virtualization demand and deployments are strong and have continued to accelerate year on year among CommVault customers, despite the ongoing economic downturn. The results of CommVault's annual Virtualization Survey, which polled Simpana® software customers worldwide, reveal the major factors driving this continued adoption of server virtualization technologies, as well as the top data protection challenges associated with protecting virtualized environments.Overall, the adoption of server virtualization has increased year on year with 34 percent of the 388 survey respondents stating their server environments were 75 percent - 100 percent virtualized. VMware continues to own the lion's share of the market vis-à-vis Microsoft and Citrix with 85 percent of those polled listing VMware as their hypervisor platform of choice. The survey revealed the top three factors driving the adoption of server virtualization among the respondents are: the need to improve cost savings through operational efficiency, reduction of capital expenditures related to hardware purchases or licensing acquisition costs, and improved ease of management.Survey respondents also show a groundswell of support for running business-critical applications on virtual machines in their production environment, including application servers (93%), Web servers (84%), databases (72%) and messaging applications (53%). According to those polled, the three most cited primary concerns surrounding the deployment of data protection solutions in virtual server environments were cost, ineffective backups and lengthy and complex restore processes. As users continue to adopt and expand server virtualization, 27 percent of respondents said that improving the backup and recovery process is one of the top initiatives for 2012. In addition, 18 percent plan to make use of virtual machine replication for disaster recovery and another 10 percent said they plan to improve overall operational processes in managing virtual environments.As virtual environments continue to b best rc helicopter buy sell market place e complex and heterogeneous with products from multiple vendors, integration and interoperability is important. In terms of data protection, however, 90 percent of respondents said they prefer a single backup application for virtual and physical environments. Data Protection Challenges in Virtual Server Environments

According to the survey results, 46 percent of the respondents are running between 50 and 250 virtual machines, which is the same percentage reported in last year's survey. However, 15 percent of respondents to this year's survey stated they are running between 250 and 500 VMs versus just nine percent last year indicating that the number of users with large-scale VM deployments continues to grow.In spite of the fact that the scale and scope of VM deployments continues to explode, a protection gap in virtual server environments remains. Only 35 percent of respondents said they are backing up all of their virtual servers.There is also a need for improved disaster recovery. Forty-three percent of respondents are relying only on backup copies as their disaster recovery plan while 20 percent rely on hardware replication and 14 percent rely on software-based replication. Sixteen percent of respondents said they have no disaster recovery plan for their virtual environment.Faced with these challenges, organizations are re-evaluating their data protection strategies to accommodate virtual server growth. Forty-three percent of respondents have already re-evaluated their data protection strategies as a result of their server virtualization initiatives and another 34 percent plan such a re-evaluation.

Better Restores with CommVault Simpana Software

Thirty-three percent of survey respond remote control helicopter ents require a restore or recovery for data in their virtual server environments about once per quarter. Twenty-three percent are performing recoveries about once a month and 16 percent stated that they restore data about once a week.Most of the respondents (63%) are performing file-based restores of just a few files at a time. Twenty-three percent reported that they restore entire virtual machines. Over a third of the survey respondents cited recovery times of four hours or less. Eleven percent reported recovery times of between two and four hours, 16 percent at between one and two hours and another 16 percent reporting recovery times of less than one hour.Simpana software meets the need for granular, file-level restores through its single-pass backup approach.

Methodology

Conducted over a 19-day period starting on July 18, 2011, the CommVault virtualization survey was sent to 16,508 individuals among CommVault's worldwide customers, and garnered 388 responses. Twenty-three percent of survey respondents reported IT operations as their primary area of technical responsibility with another 23 percent are responsible for server management and 16 percent listing data protection as their primary area of responsibility. Of the survey respondents, 30 percent are employed at organizations that employ between 1,000 and 4,999 people while 18 percent work for companies with between 5,000 and 19,999 employees. An additional 22 percent stated that they work for organizations with between 100 and 499 employees.

CPU performance part of those new quad core APU's is around older Athlon II X4 processors , which is not bad, but not great either, basically it's quite on par with integrated GPU performance so it is pretty well balanced if you use as it was intended. GPU performance is excellent for games like World of Warcraft and many others, most current titles can be ran with good settings too. The new Linux-based system, which comprises 238 Intel® Xeon® CPUs (1408 cores), will augment ZEDAT's existing IBM Power/AIX environment. The new facility will significantly enhance the department's HPC capability, providing energy efficient and cost-effective computing power to the University's extended research community. One of the key applications of the system will be CP2K, which is used to perform atomic and molecular level simulations of solid state and liquid biological systems.

Recognised as one of Germany's top tertiary education institutions, the Freie Universität Berlin is a member of Germany's Elite University group, and was a highly successful participant in the Federal Government's German Universities Excellence Initiative. ZEDAT offers students and staff a variety of services, including delivering facilities for High Performance Computing, and providing advice, procurement and maintenance of associated scientific software. ZEDAT's work supports various research groups engaged in the fields of chemistry, physics, meteorology, neuroscience, medicine, biology and economics.

Mr. Torsten Prill, Director of the ZEDAT Data Center, was influential in specifying the requirements of the new system. As a board member of the ZKI (Association of German Data Center Managers R&E), he also addressed the interests of the wider community which it will serve. In explaining their motivation for the new system, Mr. Prill summarises :

"Our primary objective is to expand both the capability and cost-effectiveness of the high performance computing facilities we offer to our scientific community. As a new partner to the University, ClusterVision undertook an extensive proof of concept, including several proposal alternatives, application benchmarking, and reference introductions to existing operational facilities such as the cluster developed for the Centre for Scientific Computing at the University of Frankfurt.

"The proposal from ClusterVision achieved the maximum score in our tender process, and represents the best price-performance ratio available for our budget. We were impressed by the innovative components proposed and the services framework that ClusterVision offers," Dr. Boris Proppe, Head of Scientific Computing Services (SCS) at ZEDAT.

The selected design configuration draws upon ClusterVision's close relationships with partners such as Dell, Intel, Asus, Qlogic, and Bright Computing. The resulting system is a commodity (X86), Linux-based system, comprising 1408 cores (228 hexa-core plus 10 quad-core CPUs), with 119 nodes arranged as 113 compute, 1 login, 2 administration and 3 storage nodes. System connectivity is via a low latency Qlogic InfiniBand network. Storage will be provided as 180 TByte of fast parallel scratch, with an expected aggregate performance of 6GB/s. The assembled system is designed to provide energy efficient, cost-effective computing power, and is expected to achieve an HPL (High Performance Linpack) benchmark result of 13 TFLOPs. As ClusterVision's software stack of choice, system management will be provided by release 5.2 of Bright Cluster Manager-Advanced Edition, from Bright Computing, with Scientific Linux as a basis. It will also feature FraunhoferFS (FhGFS), the high-performance parallel file system from the Fraunhofer Competence Center for High Performance Computing.

It is still unknown if an android 2.3 (Gingerbread) or the iBex Android 3.0 (Honeycomb) Flytouch 3 rom will be compatible. Other than the smaller 6000mah battery, I can only think of once thing that the Maipad Mx10g lacks in comparison to the iPad 2 - capacitive screen. That being said, the touch screen is very responsive seems to be the same screen that my 32gb iBex Flytouch3 has.

Industry Developments

The coalition government elected in May 2010 imposed a moratorium on new IT contracts of more than GBP1mn and announced its intention to renegotiate a number of existing contracts. However, conditions showed signs of gradual improvement in the latter part of the year, with some new managed services and systems integrations contacts being awarded.

However, the government's efficiency drive will also be a source of opportunities for IT suppliers as more public sector bodies look to utilise digital means to deliver services efficiently. The Home Offices Border Agency has announced plans to invest in new cost-saving technology. Services such as Job Seekers' Allowance applications and new business tax registrations are among those earmarked for digital delivery.

As the new government considers how to achieve savings in public sector IT expenditure, proposals have been advanced for a 'G-Cloud', which could support government IT needs from pooled datacentres to email, as well as a wide range of other applications.

Competitive Landscape

In September 2010, Atos Origin became one of the first IT services vendors to sign an agreement to restart its commercial activity with the UK government following the moratorium on new IT projects. In October 2010, Atos also announced that it had signed a GBP10mn five-year agreement with transport leader First Group to manage its datacentre and messaging services.

In the second half of 2010, the consumer notebook market weakened amid continued weak consumer sentiment. Total PC revenues including notebooks and desktops are forecast at US$16.4bn and are projected to rise to US$20.5bn by 2015 at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 6%.

UK PC shipments bounced back in H110, but the UK PC market recovery was less strong in some other European markets and in H210, back-to school and pre-Christmas sales were soft. The business segment recovery remained moderate. Tough government austerity measures were expected to restrain UK PC demand in 2011.

Software

In 2011, UK market software sales are projected by BMI at US$11.8bn and, despite the continuing climate of public and private sector budget constraints, revenues are expected to rise to US$14.7bn in 2015. The software CAGR for 2011-2015 should be in the region of 6%.

Businesses will remain cautious and the downturn may have had a lasting influence on the software market by encouraging adoption of SaaS. UK spending on cloud computing could double by 2014, with demand not only for business, but also for consumer applications such as those offered by Google.

Services

UK IT services spending is forecast to reach around US$52.4bn in 2011, up from US$50.3bn in 2010. The economic crisis and political uncertainty had a mixed impact on services spending in 2010, with most vendors reporting a sharp drop in public sector contracts, while there were signs of a revival in private sector IT services spending.

As of October 2010, around 300 public sector contracts were estimated to be under government review. Outsourcing is one of the main drivers of the IT services segment and its share of the IT market is likely to grow over BMI's forecast period as more organisations start business process outsourcing (BPO) and begin to outsource application functions.

E-Readiness

The UK has historically benefited from significant investments in network expansion and upgrades. Furthermore, various levels of network infrastructure-sharing agreements have seen mobile services cover over 90% of the population. Demand from the public sector should be steady, despite fiscal tightening, as government organisations look to control costs, while healthier bank profits in 2010 should support a revival in financial sector IT spending.

Government funding for technology policy measures in the 2010 budget of the Federal Ministry of Economics and Technology amounted to EUR2.3bn, or EUR2.8bn including stimulus measures.
